Dr. Brenna Squires, PsyD.

Ben Hatcher Sheltering Oaks Counseling

Dr. Squires is a licensed clinical psychologist, but you might also call her a facilitator, motivator, or professional problem-solver. She helps people of all ages improve their lives through individual therapy and/or psychological testing. She works with those who want to see change in their lives but may not know where to start or may need guidance on how to go about making those changes.

When it comes to therapy, Dr. Squires works with you to identify the impact of your choices and motivate you to make lasting changes in order to live a joyful and purpose-filled life. With her experience in working with diverse individuals, she understands that we all just want our voice to be heard, to have our thoughts and feelings validated, and to be shown how to move forward when we feel stuck.

She believes that self-reflective individuals who work to improve their mental and emotional well-being will change the world! The most common areas of concern that she works with include anxiety, depression, life transitions, relationship distress, and lack of purpose.

With psychological testing, Dr. Squires will assess your areas of concern by identifying the severity of the problem, identifying possible causes for the problem, and point you in the direction of appropriate resources that can help. She evaluates children as young as 2-years-old to screen for symptoms of autism, and as young as 4-years-old to begin assessing for inattention and impulsivity. She also completes a variety of assessments with children ages 5-years-old through older adulthood to evaluate cognitive, emotional, social, and/or behavioral functioning.

Some common disorders include: Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), Intellectual Disability (ID), Anxiety, Depression, Bipolar, and more. She also completes evaluations to assess giftedness and to assist veterans with receiving necessary benefits.

When embarking on this journey of self-discovery and improvement, she believes the two most important factors are honesty and patience. While the process may be difficult at times, it is always worth it in the end!

Enneagram [ 3 ]

Brenna is dominant in type 3, which is sometimes called the performer. She uses her “superpowers” of goal setting, problem-solving, and optimism to encourage clients to become their best self.

As a staff team, we recently read the book The Road Back to You: An Enneagram Journey to Self-Discovery.

If you are unfamiliar with the Enneagram, it is a personality typing tool of nine main types that has been around for a long time but has also seen a recent surge in use, especially in many churches and Christian organizations.

We have found it particularly helpful in that it both identifies blind spots and struggles each type primarily deals with, but also the unique path of growth for each type to continue becoming the person God created them to be.

Some talk about each number having their own “superpowers” and strengths, and we can see how we use many of these God-given “superpowers” in our work with clients.
